When you think about a “target market” do you imagine a specific person or group that would be interested in your work? Since everyone has different tastes, needs and resources, learning the who, where, how and what of your market you are much more likely to make sales.
Think about who has bought your work over time. Do they fit any demographic? Age? Lifestyle?
Where did you and the purchasers meet? Open studio? Gallery? Fair? Website?
How did the purchase come about? Did someone else make the sale? Did you and your customer chat about your work?
What helped them change from a looker to a buyer? Did they see you working? Did you create an experience that spoke to them?
Surviving and prospering as an artist means understanding what sales are about and learning about the business of art.
